These rehearsals are truly rehearsals. A Belgian study found that the identical pattern of brain activity that test subjects displayed while learning a computer task was repeated exactly the same during sleep.45 The brain literally repeats and practices the newly learned task while you sleep, strengthening the synaptic connections between cells to solidify the memory and skills. So don’t think of your sleep time as lost time—it’s rehearsal time to cement what you know.
Sleep and Creativity
Sleep isn’t just critical for learning. Sleep is also vital for creative breakthroughs. Tales are often told of breakthrough ideas coming to people in their sleep or dreams. Although many of these stories leave out all the prior hard work and thinking that went into the endeavor before the dream, it is true that sleep played a role in getting the insight. Research from Harvard Medical School and from Germany bears this out. For example, the German study asked adults to perform a challenging math task. The math task could be solved—and be solved more quickly—if the individual grasped a hidden shortcut. Participants were given some initial training on the math task. Then, half the participants were allowed a good night’s sleep while the other participants were not.
